Children traded library shelves for a dinosaur dig site Thursday morning as the William Bradford Huie Library hosted its popular Dino Dig Day, one of several activities planned as part of the library's summer reading program. The event drew a large crowd of young explorers who gathered to hear a dinosaur story before heading outdoors to search for buried dinosaur bones, gemstones and other treasures hidden in the sand. According to children's librarian Sarah Laughmiller, the activity was designed to reinforce that reading is an adventure filled with discovery. "All summer long we try to do programming for the kids to help get them interested in reading and loving the discovery of a good story,” Laughmiller said. "There are lots of really great fun things they can discover and enjoy through reading." Children participating in Dino Dig Day searched specially prepared digging areas divided by age groups. A section for pre-kindergarten through first-grade students allowed younger children to safely explore and dig, while a separate area accommodated older participants. "We try to make sure everyone is safe so they can have a good time," Laughmiller said.
