Sheep shearing takes centre stage at the Warracknabeal Show

Sheep shearing takes centre stage at the Warracknabeal Show

Warracknabeal Show attendees will get a hands-on look at the region’s sheep and wool heritage during two live shearing demonstrations on October 8. The demonstrations will be held at the Warracknabeal Racecourse Reserve at 12:30 pm and 2 pm, with shearer Matt Arnott set to shear six adult sheep and six lambs. Organiser Sarah Leslie said the demonstrations would highlight the process from shearing sheep through to spinning the wool. "We've got Maretta Osgood, who is going to be spinning the fleece," Ms Leslie said. Maretta will use the freshly shorn fleece to showcase how wool is spun on a spinning wheel. Attendees will also have the opportunity to try their hand at spinning, with a spinning wheel and a ball of wool available for those keen to experience the traditional craft firsthand. Running commentary will be provided by Geoff Inkster throughout the demonstrations, explaining the shearing process as the sheep are shorn. Children will also have the opportunity to take part in a hands-on shearing activity, running alongside both live demonstrations. Children will also be invited to participate in a hands-on shearing activity, using paddles to "shear" shaving cream from two timber sheep. Ms Leslie said the activities would offer attendees an engaging way to learn about the local wool industry and experience aspects of the shearing and spinning process firsthand.
