Severe Weather Preparedness tax holiday this weekend

Alabama shoppers will have an opportunity to purchase severe weather preparedness supplies without paying state sales tax during the state’s annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, set for this weekend. Counties and municipalities may choose to participate, and Morgan County, along with the cities of Hartselle and Decatur, are taking part. The three-day tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 20, and ends at midnight Feb. 22. During that time, qualifying preparedness items costing $94 or less per item may be purchased free of Alabama’s four-percent state sales tax. Generators priced at $1,564 or less also qualify for the tax exemption. The holiday allows residents to stock up on common emergency supplies used to prepare for natural disasters or general emergencies. Eligible items include a wide range of batteries, including AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries; cellular phone batteries and chargers; portable self-powered or battery-powered radios, including weatherband and NOAA weather radios; and portable self-powered light sources such as flashlights, lanterns and emergency glow sticks.
