Over a million in northeastern Nigeria face loss of emergency food aid

The U.N. World Food Program warns that over a million people in northeast Nigeria could lose emergency food aid soon without new funding. The agency plans to reduce assistance from 1.3 million to 72,000 people this year. WFP has reported that 35 million Nigerians might face severe hunger this year, the highest in Africa. Renewed violence has displaced 3.5 million people, destroyed food supplies, and worsened malnutrition. Attacks by armed groups have also deterred farming. The situation has worsened due to a reduction in U.N. food assistance after cuts by the United States.
