The brand new skatepark at Chaptico Park is now open to the public, bringing a new recreational option for skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter riders and inline skaters in northern St. Mary’s County. The Chaptico Skatepark was designed with community input and features more than 6,600 square feet of concrete construction. The facility includes a variety of features and challenges designed for riders of different skill levels. Admission to the skatepark is free. St. Mary’s County officials remind users that all participants assume the risk of injury while using the facility. Safety equipment is strongly recommended, including helmets, kneepads, elbow pads, wrist guards and proper footwear. Skaters under the age of 18 are also encouraged to wear a helmet at all times. The skatepark is designed for skateboards, scooters, inline skates and bicycles. Motorized vehicles and remote-controlled cars are prohibited. BMX riders may only use plastic stunt pegs, as metal stunt pegs are prohibited. BMX bicycles are also not permitted in the cloverleaf pool area. The park will operate during published hours and may close because of inclement weather or unsafe conditions, including thunder, lightning, wet surfaces, ice or snow.
