Move Linked To Redevelopment Of CSIA Terminal 1 The Ministry of Civil Aviation asked airlines and airport operator Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) to present a firm, phased plan for shifting operations from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The move is linked to the phased redevelopment of CSMIA ’s Terminal 1, which is scheduled to begin in January 2027. Around five million passengers, or roughly nine per cent of Mumbai Airport’s annual traffic is expected to be temporarily affected by the redevelopment. IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air are among the airlines in discussions with the airport operator over a phased transition. Under an earlier plan, 265 weekly international departure slots were proposed to be shifted from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai from October 25. The plan has currently been put on hold, with the ministry seeking greater coordination between airlines and the airport operator before the transition is finalised. A consultation involving airlines, AAHL and the Ministry of Civil Aviation is scheduled for October 13, with another meeting expected around October 20 to finalise the roadmap. The proposed transition would involve moving around five million international passengers annually to NMIA. Meanwhile, AAHL has said stakeholders will work together to ensure a smooth transition, with passenger convenience and operational continuity among the key considerations. The redevelopment of Terminal 1 is expected to eventually increase its annual capacity from around 15 million to 20 million passengers, while NMIA is being positioned to take on a greater share of Mumbai’s air traffic.
