Deming (1-3 and 0-1) surrendered 20 points in the first two quarters, and the Bulldogs sprinted to a 40-0 halftime advantage. Artesia scored in more conventional ways during the remainder of the game — both by land and air. As the second half unfolded, Artesia began to clear its sideline of reserve players and underclassmen. The Wildcats limited the Bulldogs to 13 points in the third quarter, but were now playing against the clock as well as the Bulldogs. New Mexico prep football has a mercy rule that triggers a running clock once a team achieves a 35-point advantage.
