The rate of people hospitalised due to e-scooters and e-bikes has likely more than tripled over the past five years, according to a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The AIHW says it's hard to accurately count the number of hospitalisations linked to e-scooters and e-bikes because current data lumps them in with other similar forms of transportation. However, that category of transportation, including e-scooters, was responsible for just over 4,000 hospitalisations in 2024-2025 compared to just under 1,300 in 2019-2020, the report says. The AIHW says this rise is consistent with the rise in popularity of e-scooters over that time period. The category including e-bikes has also seen increasing hospitalisation rates, but the AIHW says it's too broad a category to draw clear conclusions. Changes in data collection from July this year should soon paint a better picture of the risks, they say.
