Chromosome 21 Locus Points to Key Genes Behind Olive Verbascoside

A multi-omics study has mapped key genetic controls behind verbascoside accumulation in olive fruit, offering a clearer route from a complex metabolic trait to practical breeding targets. Verbascoside is a phenylethanoid glycoside valued for biological activities reported in previous research, yet the genetic basis of its production in olive has remained poorly resolved. By combining metabolite profiling, quantitative trait locus mapping, transcriptomics, homology analysis, whole-genome variant analysis and gene-expression validation, the researchers identified a major region on chromosome 21 and a focused set of candidate genes associated with high verbascoside levels. The findings could support faster selection of olive cultivars with targeted phenolic profiles and more predictable fruit-quality traits.
