Amine-salt-assisted crystallization enables centimeter-sized inorganic perovskite single crystals for record-sensitivity X-ray detection

Researchers at Shaanxi Normal University, Soochow University, and the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (Chinese Academy of Sciences) have grown centimeter-sized CsPbCl 3 inorganic perovskite single crystals using a low-temperature solution method for the first time, and used them to build an X-ray detector with record sensitivity among inorganic perovskite single-crystal devices. All-inorganic CsPbCl 3 single crystals are attractive for X-ray detection because of their strong X-ray absorption, wide bandgap, and superior thermal stability compared to organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. However, low-temperature solution growth of these crystals had been limited to sizes below 1 mm, a bottleneck caused by the poor solubility of the raw materials, cesium chloride and lead chloride, in common organic solvents. Larger crystals had only been achievable through energy-intensive Bridgman melt growth at temperatures exceeding 600°C. The team addressed this by introducing organic amine salts, such as methylammonium iodide (MAI), into the growth solution.
